This book is the result of the 1st Professional Trajectories Seminar: Urbanists and urbanism in Brazil – Documentation and Historical Narratives, organized jointly between the Unicamp Humanities Research Group in History of Urbanism and the City, the Urbanism Network in Brazil and the Interdisciplinary Center for Studies on the City of the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences at Unicamp. In April 2013, at the University of Brasília – UnB. It contains texts presented by researchers specially invited by the Scientific Committee, or involved in organizing the event, to explore different aspects of the relationships between professional trajectories and historical narratives related to the field of urbanism. The 1st Seminar had as its central objective the construction of a national and international forum for discussions between researchers focused on studies on the professional activities of urban planners who worked in Brazil between the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as reflective and theoretical studies on methodological procedures, conceptual contributions and work with research documentation related to professional biographies. The question set out in the title chosen for the discussion accompanied the entire debate throughout the meeting and, from this, also outlined the central aspects of this publication.
