The Silmarillion is the account of the Ancient Days of the First Age of the world created by JRR Tolkien. It is the long-ago story to which the characters of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit look back, and in whose events some of them, like Elrond and Galadriel, took part. The tales of The Silmarillion are set at a time when Morgoth, the First Dark Lord, inhabited Middle-earth, and the High Elves warred against him to recover the Silmarils, the jewels that contained the pure light of Valinor. The book begins with "Ainulindalë", the myth of the creation of the Universe, followed by "Valaquenta", where the nature and powers of each of the gods are described. In the Quenta Silmarillion there is the beginning of the counting of days in Arda (the world where the continent of Middle-earth is located), the history of the Elves in the Blessed Land of the West, their exoduses and the unfolding of the elven wars in Beleriand, which culminated with the end of the First Age. The "Akallabêth" narrates the height and fall of the kingdom of the great island of Númenor at the end of the Second Age. Finally, "Of the Rings of Power" tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, such as narrated in The Lord of the Rings.
