O Saci - by Monteiro Lobato
Descrição
A classic of children's literature, O saci rescues in our own folklore the myth of the enigmatic figure of a little elf with one leg that entered the imagination of Brazilian childhood. The universe of characters such as Pedrinho, Narizinho and Emília is portrayed with the first illustrations of the works, rescued in these special editions. The narrative reveals curious legends about the birth of the sacis, stories about the headless mule, the werewolf, the boitatá, Negrinho do Pastoreio, Cuca, and the mermaid Iara. The saci is based on the curiosity of Pedrinho, Dona Benta's grandson, who usually spends his holidays at Sitio do Picapau Amarelo, about a being from the forest who is always wearing a red hat and smoking a pipe. Fearless, the boy is not afraid of urutus, jaguars, wasps or snakes, but he discovers his fear of Saci. However, Pedrinho decides to face his fears and asks for help from the well-known Uncle Barnabé, a black man over eighty years old who lives on a thatched ranch. Impressed by Barnabé's revelations about Saci's antics, the boy starts to think only about the elf and see him everywhere. One day, he takes courage and decides to catch one. Surprisingly, the meeting with Saci becomes much more than proof of Pedrinho's courage, and turns into a great friendship permeated by conversations about life, alongside fantastic beings from Brazilian folklore.
