Women, culture and politics - by Angela Davis
Descrição
In this compilation of speeches and articles, political activist Angela Davis - author of Women, Race and Class, published with resounding success by Boitempo in 2016 - presents an overview of her fight for progressive social change. Divided into three thematic axes, 'On women and the search for equality and peace', 'On international issues' and 'On education and culture', the work addresses the political and social changes that the world has undergone in recent decades in relation to to racial, sexual and economic equality. The author provides detailed historical and statistical data on the conditions of women, the working class and the black population in the United States during the Reagan administration, showing how the policies adopted in that administration operated to weaken these social groups . It also shows the influences of North American policies on countries in Central America, Africa and the Middle East, highlighting the impact they had on strengthening a global economic movement of income concentration and weakening social struggles in several countries around the world. At the same time, she makes important reflections on the resistance represented by social movements and on the potential for raising awareness and contesting education and the arts, especially painting, photography and the blues. Through this reflection, Davis argues that the convergence of different groups, in different countries, around common interests is essential for the construction of a less unequal world.
