Language: Brazilian Portuguese. Marcelo Moutinho shows, in the thirteen short stories of this work, the true language that defines the city of Rio de Janeiro. Hence he deviates from the clichés of the wonderful city to privilege the less glamorized spaces that constitute it, focusing on the hardships, complexities and delights of the daily lives of its inhabitants. The most common experiences are, in this sense, converted into small surprises and epiphanies, thanks to an incisive look that does not dispense with the strength of affections. Everything with density and lightness at the same time. The expression in the title, Rua de Dentro, brings a welcome dubiousness. Rua de Dentro is one that, in popular speech, is not the main street (“Are you going along the main street? No, I’m going along Rua de Dentro”). The characters are equally typical of the “inner streets”: those who are not usually in the spotlight, in the main spaces of the city. But the expression also has a second meaning, as it also evokes the streets that we carry within us. Or: how the experience in collective life, on the street, reverberates inside us, our intimate streets.
