Book, Slave revolts in Brazil[LS]
Descrição
Fourteen essays on the struggles of slave resistance in Brazil analyze the biggest insurrections against the slave regime and investigate their causes, protagonists and consequences. In 1888, the victory of the abolitionist cause, materialized by an imperial law, helped to spread the historical mythology that the liberation of the enslaved occurred without struggles and bloodshed. The essays collected by João José Reis and Flávio dos Santos Gomes in this book prove exactly the opposite. Although the history of quilombos already has a broad and well-established bibliography, the revolts and conspiracies in slave quarters, the most acute and violent form of black resistance, have been less studied and understood. Until abolition, thousands of captives came together to protest and, in most cases, violently resist the slave tyranny. A collection of essays that address the main uprisings and conspiracies that undermined the slavery regime, Slave Revolts in Brazil seeks to understand the origins and desires of the heroic characters who risked their lives to resist oppression. With essays by: Eduardo Spiller Pena, Flávio dos Santos Gomes, Iacy Maia Mata, Isadora Moura Mota, João José Reis, Luiz Geraldo Silva, Lara de Melo dos Santos, Luiz Felipe de Alencastro, Marcos Ferreira de Andrade, Maria Helena PT Machado, Mário Maestri, Paulo Roberto Staudt Moreira, Ricardo Pirola, Ricardo Tadeu Caires Silva, Thiara Bernardo Dutra and Yuko Miki.
