In A Pena e a Lei, Ariano Suassuna shows himself more than ever as a severe critic of the institutions that transformed “official Brazil” into the country of elites, to the detriment of the poor people of “real Brazil”. The play, based on the popular northeastern tradition of strings and puppetry, ranges from the profane to the sacred, from the tragic to the comic, mixing themes and languages ​​in the right way. Like a good farce, it exposes painful truths, inciting laughter, while encouraging reflection on the imperfect justice of men in the face of infallible divine justice.
