Language: Brazilian Portuguese. "Pedagogy of Tolerance is a collection of texts by Paulo Freire, organized and annotated by Ana Maria Araújo Freire. It includes analyzes and reflections by the Patron of Brazilian Education on different themes: “nationals”, as he called Brazilian indigenous people; Africanity, which includes a conference on Amílcar Cabral; cultural action and citizenship; teaching/learning; some speeches given; letters full of wisdom and humor; as well as testimonies and statements about his life. The preface is by educator Lisete RG Arelaro, who was Paulo Freire's right-hand man at the Department of Education of the city of São Paulo. In 1963, in Angicos, in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, 300 rural workers were taught literacy in just 40 hours, using the method proposed by Paulo Freire. This was the result of the pilot project of what would become the National Literacy Program of the government of João Goulart, president who would be deposed in March 1964. In October of that same year, Freire left Brazil to protect his own life. He only returned to visit the country in 1979, with the democratic opening. Throughout his history, Paulo Freire received more than one hundred honorary doctorate titles, from several national and foreign universities, in addition to numerous awards, such as Education for Peace, from the UNESCO, and Order of Cultural Merit, from the Brazilian government. Member of the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame and the Reading Hall of Fame. “As an educator, I cannot think that I have the salvation of the popular classes in my hands — not at all. I dream of being saved together, but at the same time I am convinced that there is no salvation possible before liberation. First we have to free ourselves, and while we are freeing ourselves, see what we can save. Liberation cannot be donated, presented at a birthday party. Liberation is something that we create, do, in communion.” "
