The Scramble for Black Africa began in the early 19th century, but the real divisive imperialism dates from the generalization, after 1890, of the notion of 'zone of influence'. Rivalries and negotiations between European participants often referred to treaties signed with Africans, who could not, then, understand specious terms such as protectorate and others. A history of white domination and power play projected onto black geography was then outlined.
