Descrição
As the first editions of the work received such a good reception from teachers and students across the country, we were encouraged to now launch a 4th edition, completely updated. In addition to the important technical and scientific advances recorded in recent years, an attempt was made to incorporate into the text an orientation more focused on the current possibilities of achieving efficient control of endemic parasitic diseases, as, even when many of them are not yet eradicatable, they can be considerably reduced as risk factors, by having their incidence, prevalence or parasitic loads reduced to levels that do not compromise the health of our populations. The order of the chapters sometimes followed the importance of the topic and didactic reasons. Even though this work was written with great concern regarding the clarity and didactics of the subjects exposed (and reviewed by more than 60 experts), we consider it useful to recommend that readers use our Dictionary of Technical Terms in Medicine and Health, 2nd illustrated edition (Editora Guanabara Koogan, 2003), where each term or concept of medical interest is defined and explained systematically. In it, the information contributes to facilitating the relationship of each subject with other related issues, thus broadening the horizons of those who study parasitic diseases as medicine and health problems. Terminology and spelling follow the standards of the Spelling Vocabulary of the Portuguese Language, published by the Academia Brasileira de Letras, 2nd edition, Imprensa Nacional, 1998.
