Hip-hop theater kaleidoscopically translates hip-hop movement and culture: orality, resistance, invention, mixture, politics, music, dance, dramaturgy, improvisation, performance. The stage becomes an arena for the development of a dramatic action completely involved and defined by contemporary issues, everyday life or major themes. This book celebrates twenty years of the journey of the Núcleo Bartolomeu de Depoimentos and its Hip-Hop Theater, putting into print words, gestures, struggles and emotions that have spanned the last two decades in the country. FOURTH COVER A Palavra Como Território records twenty years of the Núcleo Bartolomeu de Depoimentos, since its appearance in 2000. The fourteen plays staged by the group since then are presented here in full and chronologically, with original images and texts from the scripts at the time of staging , in addition to analytical essays specially written for this edition. Despite its enormous scenic presence, it is also from words that this research work focuses on the combination, and friction, of concepts from Brechtian epic theater and urban hip-hop culture, which leads the artistic collective to create a theatrical language innovative and dynamic. Their presentations revolve, for example, around testimony, self-representation, the performance of DJs and actresses/actors MCs, who make use of sampling, spoken word (spoken poetry) and slams (spoken poetry competitions) to create universes and discuss facts and events that affect us as a society and individuals within it. Hence, the texts set out here could not be a mere “frozen image” of what was, but a reflection on what is being, part of a journey that is far from over and that expands its territory beyond the stage and also these pages.
