Language: Brazilian Portuguese. Intertwining history, politics, philosophy and biography, Italian philologist and historian Luciano Canfora (The Vanishing Library) opens up original directions for understanding thinkers who seemed to have already been studied to the maximum: Socrates, Xenophon, Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus and Lucretius. Canfora -who writes with literary talent- concretely exposes the theoretical works and practical attitudes of these philosophers and shows why they lived 'dangerous' lives. Reasons and feelings emerge from ancient texts, which become full of meaning for today's reader. Canfora's attention extends beyond the deciphering, reconstitution and interpretation of ancient texts. Believing that the history of texts has equivalent importance to the historical texts themselves, the author examines the entire context that surrounds them - political and cultural influences, requirements of the reading public - from their preparation to their editing. With this perspective, Canfora became one of the main and most original historians of our time.
