In addition to being a precursor — most of his short stories were written between the 1940s and 1960s — Rubião is a master at making the absurd penetrate everyday reality, subverting it and launching new perspectives on established themes in literature, such as desire, death, love and the meaninglessness of the modern world. This volume celebrates the centenary of Rubião's birth with all 33 short stories that the author from Minas Gerais polished to exhaustion. Completing the edition is a delightful period article by critic Jorge Schwartz and a lively unpublished essay by young writer Carlos de Brito e Mello.
