Language: Brazilian Portuguese. The Positive Pause is a very different method from the punishment or thought corner. The purpose of the Positive Pause is to help the child “feel” better (calm down) so that they can “act” better. Where did we get the absurd idea that in order for children to ACT better, we first have to make them FEEL worse? Punishment makes children feel bad. The five pillars of Positive Discipline are still present in this book:
1. Helps develop children's self-esteem.
2. Encourages respect and encouragement.
3. It is effective in the long term (considers what the child is thinking, feeling, learning and deciding about themselves and their world – and what to do in the future to survive or thrive).
4. Teaches important social and life skills (respect, concern for others, problem solving and cooperation, as well as skills to contribute at home, school and the community).
5. Invites children to discover how capable they are (encourages the constructive use of personal power and autonomy).
