Book, Prison Memoirs[LS]
Descrição
Language: Brazilian Portuguese. A political testimony of a high literary level, Memoirs of Prison reaffirm the exceptional quality of the writing of one of the greatest Brazilian writers. Only one chapter of his memoirs remained to be written when Graciliano Ramos passed away in 1953. Despite being unfinished, the book was published posthumously, originally in four volumes, with a ""Final Explanation"" by Ricardo Ramos serving as the conclusion, and soon became the author's biggest success — already renowned, but little read by the general public. Graciliano Ramos was arrested in Maceió, in March 1936, and was detained without formal charges, passing through prisons in Recife and Rio de Janeiro, until he was released in January 1937, one of the most illustrious prisoners victimized by the Vargas government's repression. . "Shy, lazy, restless, weak-willed individuals get used to prison. I, who don't like walking, never see the landscape, spend hours making small things, getting stuck in caramels, why shouldn't I get used to it too ? It wouldn't be bad if they found some involuntary, pitiful action in my actions. It's unpleasant for us to play the role of victim. I was furious to see the disgrace of capitalism, I had stuck pins into it, the only weapons available, I saw the graffiti-covered walls with satisfaction, I accepted Jacob's opinions. This would constitute a petty libel, which false witnesses would magnify. I had the right to rebel against the testimonies poisonous? Not at all. There is nothing more precarious than justice. And if they wanted to transform my thoughts into works, they would easily discover material for condemnation."
