Palmares is the best-known quilombo, but several others existed, spread across Brazil. Quilombos occupied hinterlands and forests. They attacked cities, towns, mines, mills and farms. They created their own, often prosperous, economies. They became involved with political movements from other social sectors and developed their own movements. They took advantage of national, regional and international political situations to advance their interests and freedom projects. It is this story of the search for freedom, full of pitfalls, conflicts and compromises, that the articles in this book unravel, as they look at the complex panorama of slavery and black resistance.
