In the first edition of A Imagem no Ensino da Arte, Ana Mae Barbosa, when dealing with the issue of learning art history - Imanol Aguirre Arriaga explains to us, in her acute preface to this edition -, already highlighted the need for a report that open space for economic, political and social contextualization, opposing a linear conception of history interested only in the evolution of artistic forms over time. The objective of his proposal was to form the criteria of spectators, in this case children, in order to provide them with an understanding of the governing codes, to which only a cultural and social elite had access. The Triangular Proposal thus appeared in the panorama of Brazilian education as a well-defined plot, which over the years would be revised and polished, either by circumstances or by experience itself. Ana Mae Barbosa's thought is as suggestive as it is innovative, in that it breaks with the formalist and philo-linguistic modes prevailing at the time. From the outset, it was possible to see in his proposal the willingness to connect with other visions, equally prone to the idea of 'open work' and, therefore, expand towards a cultural semiotics of the reading of art, whose nexus is makes it perceptible from the perspective of education, conceived with the opportunity to liberate the less favored strata, thus becoming a powerful operative factor of cultural literacy. In this way, what could have been relegated to the condition of an additional activity, as was then usual in a disciplinary conception of artistic education, crossed the endogamous boundaries of the arts and placed itself at the service of an inclusive and liberating pedagogy. These are the aspects that make Image in the Teaching of Art, in this new edition, revised by the author, a mandatory reference for those who dedicate their reflection to the problems of education in Brazil today and for those who apply their work in this field.
