Language: Brazilian Portuguese. At the end of the 19th century, neuroses that manifested themselves through somatizations, hallucinations and anguish were called “hysterias”. To study this phenomenon, Freud wrote, together with doctor Breuer, Studies on Hysteria - an essential work for understanding psychoanalysis. Reporting the cases of five patients - including the famous Anna O. -, they argue that hysterics suffer because they have suffocated the memory of the events that gave rise to the disease. It is then necessary to bring these traumas to light, initially through hypnosis. But, as this does not work with some patients, Freud resorts to free association, making his method even more complex.
