Without the category of “malaise” it is not possible to think about the subject’s destinies today. Why do we feel that happiness is incompatible with the demands of social life? Questions of this type made this essay the most read in Freud's work. In this volume, we bring together the author's main texts on culture, society and religion. What threatens us is not only illness or death, but also the rupture of social ties and the uncertainty of the future. The global crisis in which we are immersed today – the pandemic that, at breakneck speed, brought east and west, north and south – is still a decisive opportunity to test the relevance of Freudian categories.
