Book, Freud the Unfamiliar Das Unheimliche bilingual The sandman[LS]

Language: Brazilian Portuguese. No text by Freud has been translated in such different ways. In Portuguese, “Das Unheimliche” has already been translated as “The Stranger” and, more recently, as “The Uncanny”; in other languages, as equivalents to “The disturbing strangeness”, “The disturbing familiar”, “The sinister”, “The ominous”, “The disturbing” etc. This simple enumeration shows us the challenge of translating the untranslatable. In this edition, the reader has in their hands a translation that is not only original, but also bold and rigorous: *O infamiliar. The “unfamiliar” is not the result of fidelity to the source language, but, on the contrary, a visible mark of the impossibility of perfect translation. In this way, it is also an “intraduction”, which, instead of hiding the problem of the inevitable equivocation of the translation, makes it surface. This edition, which celebrates 100 years since the first publication of “Das Unheimliche” with a bilingual and annotated edition of Freud's text, also features an unprecedented translation of the short story “The Man in the Sand”, by ETA Hoffmann, a fictional work that showed the Freud the specificity of a very common psychic mechanism, a sensation linked to anguish and horror, which we experience as something at the same time very far away and very close to us, very strange and very familiar, very unsettling and very close. To complete the volume, several essays by renowned experts in psychoanalysis, literature, aesthetics and translation comment on essential aspects of the work: Christian Dunker, Ernani Chaves, Gilson Iannini, Guilherme Massara Rocha, Pedro Heliodoro Tavares and Romero.
