Descrição
Language: Brazilian Portuguese. After the collapse of 'barrack socialism', the direction of the left seems both open and difficult. If we have, on the one hand, those who are nostalgic for communism, those traumatized by what would have been a great defeat of 'socialism' (the widows of Lenin, Mao, and even Stalin) and, on the other, those who, after all, they are resigned to seeing capitalism as the only alternative to totalitarian misdeeds, there are still those who, refusing one or the other, and without making concessions to the negative side of social democratic experiences, believe in the possibility of relaunching and renewing the project of a democratic socialism. It is precisely this program that The Difficult Left: around the paradigm and destiny of the revolutions of the 20th century and some other themes, which the publisher Perspectiva offers to the reader in its Studies collection, deals mainly with its 'negative' prolegomena, that is, of the critical analysis, frequent today but rarely carried out with rigor, of what was the hegemonic doctrine on the left throughout the previous period, Marxism, and of the assessment, also often initiated but still incomplete, of what was the practice dominant of that period, communist politics. With these two themes and a few other related themes, Ruy Fausto contributes, with a keen vision, to the necessary effort of self-reflection on the contemporary left.
