Language: Brazilian Portuguese. He Who the Abyss Saw is one of the versions of the myth of Gilgámesh, which is attributed to Sin-léqi-unnínni (13th century BC), considered the most complete and important of this Akkadian tradition, preserved in clay tablets that were discovered among 1872 and 2014. The text, translated from Akkadian and annotated by Jacyntho Lins Brandão, brings to the Brazilian reader the most comprehensive reconstruction of the poem, which is the oldest literary record we know. In the tradition that goes back more than four thousand years, it predates Homer, Hesiod and the biblical texts. In this long (and still fragmentary) poem we find, already elaborated in a sophisticated way, ideas, values and readings of the world – in addition to several myths that will appear in the later literary tradition, such as the creation of man from clay, the flood and the construction of an ark to save creatures, humans and animals.
