Diderot was a great admirer and defender of Seneca, partly because he suffered the same accusations. In this essay, he intervenes for himself and for the father of Stoicism by defending the role of the intellectual in power. Edited and published for the first time in 1778 under the title Essay on the Life of Seneca, the Philosopher, On His Writings and the Reigns of Claudius and Nero, the essay underwent several changes after being harshly criticized. Four years later, Diderot returns in a new version, with the purpose of discussing the values ​​in crisis and, above all, demonstrating the inconsistencies regarding Seneca's much-discussed hypocrisy.
