Descrição
The Religious' is the third of Denis Diderot's main novelistic stories published by Perspectiva publishing house, continuing its project of bringing to the reading public the most significant things the great thinker of the Enlightenment produced in terms of philosophical, scientific, literary and in the wide spectrum of themes and interests that his writing activity covered. In this narrative, developed as a memorial epistle of a young woman forced to submit to monastic orders, the novelist takes his pen to the recesses of emotions and experiences of a personality tyrannized by impositions against which his entire being, in the vigor of youth, , rebels. In the same move, however, and in contrast, framing the character's actions in the conditions that surround her in social, customary, moral and psychological terms, the plot unfolds a revealing picture not only of prevailing monastic practices, but of society, especially in its most bourgeois stratum, in the century that marked history with the French Revolution. This profound and controversial creation, born of a mystification promoted by the author and his friend Grimm, goes beyond the playful levity that triggered it, to, in a brilliant fiction, exquisitely bring together the voice and persona of the young nun, with the speech and the claim of an era that echoes, at the same time, the deepest desires of humanity.
