Book, Hospice Diary and The Cemetery of the Living[LS]

Admitted twice to psychiatric institutions due to alcoholic delusions, Lima Barreto documented his stay at the National Hospício dos Alienados, in Rio de Janeiro, in a lucid and incisive way. In the unfinished novel The Cemetery of the Living, the author transposed the same experience into a fictional form. The two texts were published together posthumously, in 1953 and in 2010, they received a new and careful edition organized by Augusto Massi and Murilo Marcondes de Moura and prefaced by Alfredo Bosi. Now relaunched by Companhia das Letras, this edition has new notes and images, which offer a new contextualization of the asylum environment, in addition to including at the end a new report by Raymundo Magalhães dated 1920.
