Descrição
Paulo Bonavides is often seen as the great constitutionalist in Brazil and the theorist of this branch of Law who innovated its methodology, its themes and its hermeneutics. The pluralistic and open vision of the Constitution is also credited to this scientist. This researcher, however, delved into even deeper themes of Political Science and State Theory, and did so with philosophical arguments that attract attention. State theorist and political scientist with a German background, the first decades of his academic research were focused not on Constitutional Law, but on State Theory, an area in which he produced his Associate Professorship and Doctorate theses. I refer to the books Dos Fins do Estado (Fortaleza: Editora Instituto do Ceará, 1955) and Do Estado Liberal ao Estado Social (Fortaleza: Imprensa Universitária, 1958); and to them I add those entitled Theory of the State (São Paulo: Saraiva, 1967) and Political Science (Rio de Janeiro: Fundação Getulio Vargas, 1967). The most fruitful (and most vigorous) phase of Paulo Bonavides' scientific production was perhaps the 1960s. 1967 is certainly the most emblematic year of his career, because his Theory of the State and the his Political Science. If he had only edited these two monuments of Brazilian political law, Paulo Bonavides would already be our great political scientist and our greatest philosopher of the State, without the repairs that were made densely in A Crise Política Brasileira, from 1969, and throughout its later creation.
