The main objective of this book is to debate and analyze the most relevant and complex themes of “political economy” in the Brazilian context, with emphasis on macroeconomic policy and governance structures. The object of study of political economy focuses on the origin, nature and functioning of the State, which makes its scope much broader than traditional economics. The aim is, therefore, to understand the broad and complex functioning of the economy, government and public management, as well as the internal and external opportunities and restrictions arising from Brazil's insertion into world capitalism. The effects of macroeconomic policies on economic development, as well as on the political field and power structures, are translated into increased productivity, employment levels, income and its distribution. The political dimension in the economic sphere involves numerous sensitive areas of the country, which are affected by the decisions and actions of government officials, making studies to understand the interactions between economy and politics become increasingly important in the current scenario. In this sense, understanding how governance structures can contribute to the success of economic policy, how the political and electoral decision-making process can affect economic results, or the effects of structuring a social policy on economic activity are issues that are at the center concerns of the studies covered in this book. This arises from the perception that the relationship between State and society is effective through the political economy, especially through the guidelines of macroeconomic policies and governance structures. In its chapters, the book presents, describes and analyzes different themes identified as strategic for Brazil, from the perspective of political economy. The studies developed here are on the border between the analysis of political theory and economic theory.
