Language: Brazilian Portuguese. The first star of modernity, history was the privileged mode of intelligibility of our subjective and social experiences; the place where modern Western societies believed they found their truth. But, for at least fifty years, this almost always unsuspected task of history has been systematically doubted, including by historians themselves. In Believing in History, François Hartog continues his investigations into the concept of history, returning to historiographical and political questions that accompany his interpretation of our time and its regime of dominant historicity: presentism. His question brings to the forefront, and in an unavoidable way, the problem of the relationship between temporal experience and the writing of history. One of the most exciting challenges today is related to the effectiveness of history, its ability to open up perspectives for the future. The critical reflection that the reader finds in this book is no longer an announcement of the “end of history”, an omen of the end of a certain historical mode of existence. Believing in history is a call to the task of resolving, through history, the impasses of history.
