Book, Against morals and good customs dictatorship repression of LGBT[LS]

A dive into the darkest period in our recent history to reveal the moral politics that underpin the repression of LGBT groups. Against Morals and Good Customs dissects the sexual policies of the Brazilian dictatorship, addressing the violent and repressive moral control directed at LGBT groups by the military apparatus in the leaden years. Law professor at Unifesp, lawyer and activist in the field of human rights, Renan Quinalha uses extensive period documentation, especially the files worked on by the Truth Commission, to demonstrate that, despite having older historical roots, in the regime that began with the Coup of 64, the repression of people who challenged heteronormativity gained a new dimension. In addition to revealing the systematization of violence at all levels — persecution and censorship of vehicles such as Lampião and Chana com Chana, closure of community meeting points, arrests, beatings, torture —, Quinalha demonstrates how a social movement as young as the LGBT managed not only to survive, but to follow a path of achieving fundamental rights.
