Language: Brazilian Portuguese. The new play As Conchambranças de Quaderna, from 1987, marked Ariano Suassuna's return to theatrical writing, after a absence of more than 25 years. “Conchambrança” is a corruption of “conchambrança”, which means conch, combination. It was in the form of “conchambrança” that Suassuna heard the word for the first time, in the backlands of Paraíba. A form that fits perfectly into the universe of the play, since the protagonist, Dom Pedro Dinis Quaderna, brings to the public some of his memories, telling us three imbroglios in which he took part and in which he had to make a series of compromises to resolve situations to your satisfaction, taking advantage of everything and everyone. Each of the three acts, therefore, functions as an independent piece, and it is Quaderna who stitches together the episodes, providing the unity of the show.
