Language: Brazilian Portuguese. The turbulent political events of August 1954 in Rio de Janeiro, capital of the Republic, are the starting point of one of Rubem Fonseca's greatest hits. Alberto Mattos, police commissioner, tries to solve the murder of a businessman in the Deauville building, while the frustrated attack on journalist Carlos Lacerda, an opponent of Getúlio Vargas, is planned at the Palácio do Catete. In the days before Vargas' suicide, Rubem Fonseca — in his fifth novel — reports and relates the two episodes, masterfully mixing reality and fiction.
