This book was written with chemical engineering students in mind, however, the first three chapters are important for the basic cycle of any engineering course. The second chapter deals with systems of units and, in particular, the international system, covering current definitions of units that have undergone changes in recent decades and methods for converting units of empirical equations. The third chapter addresses liquid and gaseous materials, aiming at ways of expressing the compositions of mixtures, whether in fraction, concentration or content of components. The fourth chapter deals with material balance, a key topic for the chemical engineering course and which will be of value for subsequent disciplines, in particular, the unit operations of chemical engineering. The fifth chapter, after a basic presentation of thermodynamics, shows ways to resolve energy balances in physical processes and chemical reactions. These two chapters permeate the entire chemical engineering course, and will be useful even for professionals in the field to review the basic concepts associated with these topics.
