Brazilian Stories Vol.2
Brazilian Stories Vol.2
Descrição
In 2002, author Ana Maria Machado launched the first volume of a series of "Brazilian-style" stories that she intended to bring together in a book. The project was born from the author's desire to tell, in her own words, the stories she had heard from her parents and grandmother, as she explains in the book's introduction: "I come from a family where a lot of stories were told. With books or without book. And the repertoires varied a lot, depending on the accountant". Generations of anonymous narrators helped to construct the most different versions of these stories from oral culture and Brazilian and universal folklore. To create her own, the writer read works by popular culture scholars and researched collections of short stories from different traditions. From a mixture of research, comparison of the different versions, personal memory and tradition, the first volume of Histórias à brasileira was born. In this second volume, Ana Maria Machado brings ten more stories: three episodes involving the character Pedro Malasartes - "Pedro Malasartes and the colossal mud", "Pedro Malasartes and the magical surrão", "Pedro Malasartes and the stone soup" -, in addition from "Poltrona de lice", "The tar doll", "The figs of the fig tree", "The tortoise and the teiú", "The tortoise and the caipora", "The red hen" and "The life of the giant". In Odilon Moraes' illustrations, the Brazilian environment of the stories is freely recreated, giving rise to a new, illustrated version of each story. Odilon is a writer, illustrator and translator of children's literature. Through Companhia das Letrinhas, he published A princessinha medrosa (2002). Among the awards he received are the Jabuti for illustration in 1994, for Siegfried's saga.
