Ten traditional stories retold in Brazilian style by award-winning writer Ana Maria Machado, winner of the Hans Christian Andersen, considered the Nobel Prize for children's literature. It is not known for sure who invented the book's narratives: people tell them because they heard someone tell them for them. In the case of Ana Maria Machado, the person who told some of these stories was the writer's grandmother. And Ana Maria's grandmother, in turn, had heard the same stories from her grandmother. This is the case of "Pimenta no cocuruto", which tells the story of a chicken that, one fine day, scratched under a pepper tree. Suddenly, a pepper falls on top of her head, right on the top of her head. The poor chicken thinks it's a warning that the world is ending and goes out spreading the news to the animals. "A Moura Torta" is the story of an old one-eyed witch who everyone called Moura Torta because she looked like a witch. She goes to get water from the stream, sees the reflection of a beautiful female figure in the water and thinks she is seeing herself. The girl in the reflection is actually an enchanted princess. Moura Torta does a spell and transforms her into a white dove to try to steal the girl's prince. In addition to "A Moura Torta" and "Pimenta no cocuruto", the book also contains the short stories "The Monkey and the Viola", "João Bobo", "Party in the sky", "Dona Baratinha", "O Bicho Folhagem", "O Veado e a Onça", "Maria Sapeba" and "The chicken that raised a mouse".
