From a planisphere from 1502 to software that tracks deforestation in the Amazon in the 21st century via satellite, from quilombola community organizations to the Plano Piloto, História do Brasil em 25 maps brings an unprecedented study, carried out by researchers from the most different areas, to think about Brazil from its cartography.
According to Andréa Doré and Junia Furtado, organizers of this book, “maps don’t just talk about what they represent. Sometimes they say more about what they keep silent about, and their silences become eloquent.” Objects of careful investigation to reveal their meanings ― sometimes very clear; others, almost hidden ―, none of the components of a map are chosen by chance.
Portuguese America, Dutch Brazil, the Society of Jesus, smuggling, rural revolts, native peoples, immigration, epidemics and dictatorship ― these are some of the major themes covered in the volume. Although organized in chronological order, starting with the classic Planisfério de Cantino ― reproduced in color in an image notebook with the main maps of the volume ―, the chapters of this book do not need to be read in sequence, just as the history of Brazil should not be read linearly. In addition to the 25 highlighted maps ― starting point for each analysis portrayed here ―, letters and other elements are recovered that contribute to the dialogue and understanding of the subject covered.
In this unmissable collection on the cartography of Brazil, atlases, maps of tributaries, posters and maps are presented that record the country's past to tell readers a new story based on details - or the lack thereof.
