Tales and chronicles - by Machado de Assis

Considered by many scholars as the greatest Brazilian writer of all time, Machado de Assis, like several black intellectuals of his time, had his image whitened to meet racist ideals. This whitening occurred in the process of lightening images, in photos and illustrations and in modifying the physical features of the illustrious people who were represented. Over time, unfortunately, many of these black intellectuals became known for several generations as white people. Launched by Faculdade Zombie dos Palmares and Agência Grey, the “machado de assis real” campaign asks readers to print the new image of the writer and paste it over the traditional photo printed in their books. As an engagement in the action that aims to rescue blackness in the representations of Machado de Assis, the publisher Malê launches the book Machado de Assis: Tales and Chronicles, a collection of the most popular tales and texts (stories and chronicles) in which the author addresses the racial issue. The book is a great opportunity to present the real Ax of Assisi to present and future generations.
