The English traveler is Maria Graham, wife of a British Navy officer who came with her husband to South America during the struggles for independence in Chile and Brazil, having lived in that country and in Brazil, in Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro . Maria dedicated herself to writing diaries in which she described landscapes and their inhabitants, and commented and recorded everyday events, especially those of a political nature.

The lord of the seas is Thomas Cochrane, a British Navy officer, an excellent navigator and an almost invincible strategist. Nicknamed El Diablo, he participated heavily in the struggles for independence in Chile and later Brazil.

The Emperor is D. Pedro I, who declared Brazil's independence.

In this historiographical chronicle with which historian and writer Mary Del Priore debuts in the Vestígio catalogue, these three characters intersect and relate to each other as if they were fiction, but not so: they existed and acted within and behind true facts of our history, in a very interesting period; the aura of romance, of fiction is due to the tasty, fluent and passionate text with which Del Priore presents the reader.
