Machado de Assis wrote and published almost 200 short stories. Choosing 40 for this anthology is no simple task. The collection reveals the great Brazilian writer, whose main production dates back to the last decades of the 19th century and demonstrates his potential as an excellent observer of the human soul and the urban society of Rio de Janeiro, then the country's capital. The selection was made by professor and writer Mário Feijó, valuing short stories that appeal to both young people and experienced readers.
